Decisions… Decisions.. *sigh*
Hey Everyone!
I have been doing a huge amount of praying and thinking these past few months. As many of you know, I have been considering joining the Army National Guard since early this year, hoping to get a job at the local base in IT. Indeed, I am taking the ASVAB today!
However, my goal was emphatically not a career in the military, nor a career in computers. My dream is to support myself as a writer; writing for magazines, newspapers, and even my own novel. I understand fully that it is very unlikely that I will be able to support myself and my future family on a writer’s income.
Armed with this knowledge, I have sought other ways of earning a good income, while still allowing me to work on my passion. Many ideas have come and gone. I have considered beekeeping, IT, waiting tables at a restaurant, joining the military, working at a newspaper, becoming an indie artist, teaching school, even going into the ministry!
The one path that seemed to make sense most of the time was joining the military. I have always been a staunch patriot, and I long to stand up and fight for my country. My brother told me of a possible position opening at the local base. It would allow me to employ my talents with computers, which I had previously relegated to the realm of “hobbies”, in order make a solid living for myself. I’d also have the opportunity to gain experience and certifications which would help me land ever more amazing jobs in the future. In IT.
However, that is not my future goal! Remember, my goal is to become a writer, and to support myself with another job until such time as my writing becomes profitable. I have also discovered that that specific job opportunity is not really a possibility anyway, so it’s rather a moot point. While I still will stand up for my country and do my best to protect her, I do not feel that God is guiding me into the military.
So, I have decided to stay a civilian. I’m seeking work at the local paper and restaurants. I plan on moving out toward Boise/Meridian/etc this fall, and praying for work. I am studying web design, with God’s help I’m planning on doing a lot in that area. So there it is. I’m going to be a waiter. Possibly a junior editor at our small paper. And a web designer.
Throughout this time, I will continue refining my writing skills. You all know about my blogs, I hope. Read them, give me feedback. Whether it is sentence structure, dialogue, or concrete writing, or simply telling me I’m doing great, I’d really appreciate hearing from you! I’m also going to continue writing my novel, so pray that I am able to write well. In an interesting fashion. And that people would want to read it!!!
Thanks for reading this. What is new in your life?
Jesse
