Is the internet secure?

No, anyone with the right tools and knowledge can break security measures.

Security online is a twofold problem. First, the user must be savvy enough to know the correct measures to take for maximum security. Secondly, the technologies used by users must be in itself secure.  There are many technologies being used today which are supposed to give us that security. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure), and several others aspire to keep your data safe and encrypted when you use the World Wide Web. However, these measures do not actually keep your data safe from an inquisitive person with the right tools. It is possible to actually read data being sent over secure connections.   Thus, the only real way to keep your data secure from dedicated spys is to keep it safe in offline storage.
However, the fact that network data is easily accessed does not necessarily mean that your information is being read by anyone. The old “Security through Obscurity” adage holds true; if no one is targeting you, you will be safe.
I hope this helps you understand internet security better! For more information about networks and security, read about these tools used by security experts: http://www.wireshark.org/ |http://www.metasploit.com/
